With balmy temperatures in the mid-30s and sunny skies, about 130 people participated in the 2nd annual Dickens of a Run & Walk Dec. 6 in Stoughton.
Snowflakes and a chimney, elves and almost naked men and a dog made the 5K or 2K trek through the streets of historic Stoughton during its lovely Victorian Holiday Weekend. Participants ranged from 4 years of age to 73 and came from 20 Wisconsin communities and Texas. There were food baskets for the first-place 5K runners, hand-knitted stockings for the best dressed, a T-shirt for the least dressed and doggie treats for the top dog. Participants all had a chance to win door prizes and other goodies. Besides the Yahara River Grocery Cooperative, the Dickens of a Run & Walk was sponsored by Evergreen State Bank, Navitas Health and Fitnee, Stoton Cycle and Fleet Feet Sports of Madison. The run benefits the Co-op and the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce Victorian Holiday Weekend Committee. |

Everyone helped a Dickens of a lot!Thank you to all of the runners, walkers, volunteers, Stoughton businesses and the weather for making the 2nd Annual Dickens of a Run & Walk one of Stoughton’s Victorian Holiday Weekend success stories. It was a Dickens of a lot of fun! With balmy temperatures in the mid-30s and sunny skies, about 130 runners and walkers participated in the 2- or 5-kilometer run/walk, and a dozen volunteers helped them find their way through the streets of the city. Thank you to Jim McGrogran who returned to defend his least-dressed title and raised about $100 in pledges. Challenging Jim and taking the 2009 least-dressed title was “naked guy” Jim McNulty who ran in only shorts. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our co-sponsors: Evergreen State Bank who donated the participant “goodie” bags and $75 in shopping gift certificates; Navitas Health and Fitness who gave more than $300 in prizes; Stoton Cycle who designed and set up the course; and Fleet Feet Sports of Madison who contributed race bibs, cups and other support. A big thank you to the more than 20 Stoughton businesses who filled the participant “goodie” bags with coupons and gift items. Also, we appreciate the “loan” of the timing equipment from the Stoughton High School cross country team. The Dickens of a Run & Walk Committee consisting of Yahara River Grocery Co-op volunteers pulled it all together. Thank you to Deb Piper, Norma Sampson, Marcia Whelan, Phil Caravello, Regina Hirsch, Laura Anderson, Kristine Vaughn, Warren Kmiec, Susan Meyers and Jeanine Holzmann for donating their time, talent and energy to organizing the event. Additional thanks to Laura for knitting stockings, Regina for putting together prize baskets and door prizes and Marcia for making the finish line banner. A special thanks to Ben Stefanic for gathering coal, Arnold Whelan for setting up the finish line, Brian DaValt for assisting with the timing and about a dozen other YRGC volunteers who helped make the 2nd Dickens of a Run & Walk a success. Yahara River Grocery Co-op, Evergreen State Bank, Navitas Health and Fitness, Stoton Cycle, Fleet Feet Sports and the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce hope the Dickens contenders and volunteers wear their hats in honor and return with their friends to run or walk in nippy weather again next year. Until then, please continue to support the local economy by shopping locally-owned stores in this fair city. Thank you! Yahara River Grocery Cooperative and Victorian Holiday Weekend Committee |

In the opening stave of A Christmas Carol, Dickens describes Ebenezer Scrooge: "External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him."
