With temperatures in the mid-50s, there was a record turnout for the 5th annual Dickens of a Run & Walk. It was such a beautiful day, that 67 participants registered the morning of the race for a total of 227 runners and walkers. Many were dressed in holiday finery and all enjoyed sunshine as they jogged through the historic streets of Stoughton during its lovely Victorian Holiday Weekend!
Participants ranged in age from 6 to 71 and included Santa and his toy maker and elves from Oregon. Thirty of the runners/walkers were "youngsters" in the 6 to 18 age range. Runners and walkers came from 40 different communities – from surrounding towns to metropolitan Milwaukee, southwest Wisconsin, the Portage/Baraboo/Dells area, and several from Illinois and one from Texas. Range was from the serious runners to the recreational set to friends and families getting out and walking/running together. There were prizes for the top 5K finishers and best dressed. In addition to prizes to the top finisher in the three 5K divisions, door prizes were drawn for multiple prizes, all donated by race sponsors. |

The Dickens of a Run & Walk raised money for Stoughton food pantries, the Victorian Holiday Weekend Fund and the Yahara River Grocery Co-op. The Co-op also collected canned food items for a food drive. Besides the Yahara River Grocery Cooperative, the Dickens of a Run & Walk was sponsored by McFarland State Bank, The Next Generation, Stoton Cycle, Fleet Feet Sports Madison, Benushi's Bar & Grill (BBG) and Anytime Fitness. Additional thanks to Oak Knoll Neuromuscular Massage Therapy for their race support; the Stoughton Police Department for their assistance with safety on the course; and to chef Mary Huotari of the Yahara River Grocery Cooperative for the fresh bakery items that were served. In the opening stave of A Christmas Carol, Dickens describes Ebenezer Scrooge: "External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him."
